Mission Statement

Mission Statement

To train family medicine residents to be exemplary clinician leaders and educators who are able to provide care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, with special emphasis on the care of vulnerable and underserved patients and their communities.

Program Aims

  1. Provide a broad based curriculum that includes rich inpatient and ambulatory experiences reflecting current community and evidence-based medicine.
  2. Provide a multitude of leadership opportunities to our residents while in training.
  3. Provide exposure to the abundant resources of our University community to inspire those resident physicians interested in research and medical education.
  4. Inspire our residents to find and pursue their personal passions in medicine by providing them flexibility and access to a multitude of experiences and resources in planning their three years of training.
  5. Maintain an expansive list of community outreach opportunities to include but not limited to mentorship programs in communities of greatest need, community health fairs, providers of care to our homeless and near homeless communities, and global health opportunities.
  6. Render multiple opportunities for the residents’ expansion of their skills as teachers.
  7. Provide role models of exemplary teaching and patient care.
  8. Engage our residents in our recruitment of future residents demonstrating our commitment to finding those students who possess leadership skills, a commitment to care of vulnerable and underserved patients and their communities in California, and a genuine appreciation for the incredible diversity that our greater Los Angeles area and California in general have to offer.

Diversity Statement

The UCLA Family Medicine Residency Program, along with the Department of Family Medicine, remain committed to embracing the demographic diversity including race, ethnicity, citizenship status, religion, and gender/gender identity that enriches both our local and statewide environment. We also are cognizant of the challenges faced by those hoping to pursue training in healthcare that result from discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, citizenship status, religion, disability, veteran status, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We are committed to being a program that provides access to the study of and training in healthcare, including education, research, community engagement, and clinical care without discrimination. Therefore, we actively strive to make all housestaff, faculty and staff aware of the diverse intellectual and life opportunities that abound in our department, at UCLA, and in the greater Los Angeles community to help battle discrimination and embrace diversity. Several of our residents and faculty have participated in promoting diversity and mentoring residents and students from underrepresented or marginalized groups in order to ensure a welcoming and positive academic experience, provide access to university resources when needed, and serve as transformative role models. Through deliberate recruiting practices and education at all levels we hope to continue our successful promotion of diversity and dedication to an environment of equity, communication, and respect.
