During this rotation, we rotate through subspecialty clinics at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital including urology, neurology, GI, ophthalmology, rheumatology, and ENT.  This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.

Away Elective (1 month)

Each resident has the opportunity to do an elective that is geographically located away from the residency, including internationally, providing a unique educational experience. Some funding is available to each resident for this elective.

Behavioral Science: UCLA Family Health Center (2 weeks)

Emphasis on in-depth didactics facilitated by staff psychologist and addiction medicine, discussing psychiatric disorders and psychosocial issues commonly encountered with patients. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.

Community Medicine (1 month)

This rotation consists primarily of continuity clinic with time at Midvalley Urgent Care interspersed. Residents also have the opportunity to volunteer at a homeless shelter once a week. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine: CHLA (2 weeks)

We rotate through the ED at CHLA, where we build on our skills from our time during the PGY2 Olive View Pediatric rotation. Patients here tend to be higher acuity. We manage pediatric patients from newborns to teens. Shifts are typically 10 hours.

Elective (2.5 months)

We have 5 two-week elective rotations during the PGY-3 year.  This provides each resident with the opportunity to individualize their training based on personal interest.  Some examples of electives that residents have done in the past few years include outpatient pediatrics, East-West medicine, cosmetic dermatology, Planned Parenthood, sports concussion, and palliative care.  These are non-call rotations, and weekends are free.

Family Medicine Inpatient Service: UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center (3 months)

Our core family medicine inpatient rotation at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. The team consists of two interns, two PGY-2s, and is led by a senior PGY-3. The service is a combination of 1) continuity pediatric, OB, adult, and geriatric patients seen at our UCLA Family Health center that are admitted and staffed with a Family Medicine attending, 2) internal medicine patients that have a UCLA primary care doctor and staffed with an Internal Medicine hospitalist attending, and 3) OB patients who do not have a UCLA primary care doctor and staffed with on call OB laborists. We typically table round. ICU patients are co-managed with intensivists, who oversee bedside procedures such as chest tubes, arterial lines, and intubations. And finally, we are the primary Code Blue and rapid response team. This is a 12-hour shift work schedule for the PGY-3s and there is one day off in every seven.

Orthopedic Surgery: West Los Angeles VA (1 month)

During this rotation, we work closely with the UCLA Orthopaedic residents at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital learning about diagnosis and treatment of fractures and dislocations.  We also rotate through subspecialty orthopedic clinics including Hand, Foot and Ankle, Spine, and Shoulder.  This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.

Surgery: Olive View Medical Center (1 month)

We work at Olive View-UCLA in the outpatient surgery clinics on this rotation with the UCLA General Surgery residents.  We diagnose and manage patients with biliary disease, breast disease, and skin and soft tissue masses.  This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.

Women's Health Elective (2 weeks)

Residents have the opportunity to rotate through various Women's Health clinics, such as Planned Parenthood, Harbor UCLA, and Midvalley. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.
